Lucille Ball sketch on canvasboard

tags:

topics: ArtPaintingProgression

Lately I’ve been a little obsessed with classic comedians, in particular Lucille Ball and Jerry Lewis. And two weeks ago I bought 3 new canvasboards so of course I wanted to put them to good use right away and chose to start with Lucille Ball.
This sketch has been sitting on my (brand new) easel for a week and I am anxious to start painting it.

The thing is though, I would love to make a little art video of its process, but I mostly paint at night and I don’t have a good lamp to install in my new ‘creative corner’ yet, we have one somewhere and we sent out a search party but no luck yet.

Even though all I have right now is a sketch, I just really wanted to show you guys what I’m working on, or more specifically: hope to be working on soon! Just click it for a larger view. :)

Getting ready for Halloween

topics: ArtPaintingProgression

Been a while since I updated, huh? I have not yet completed the Courteney Cox drawing I had been working on, I will though, at some point. I just have some stuff happening in my life which had temporarily distracted me from the drawing and then I suddenly felt I’d rather be painting:

Doesn’t look like much yet, I know, but hopefully its time will come.

Another drawing in progress - Courteney Cox - last 4 stages

tags:

topics: ArtDrawingProgression

Current stage of the drawing:

I’ve been learning a bit on how to draw hair using this tutorial because I’ve never been very good at drawing hair and so far I think that what I did in this drawing, the hair is much better than on my previous drawings, although the picture is a little too dark and maybe too small to actually get a good look at the hair (somehow I always notice these things after I already closed Photoshop) but hopefully you get the idea. :)

From left to right are the previous stages:
Stage 3 (sept. 10), stage 2 (sept. 7) and the 1st stage (sept. 6):

Helena Bonham Carter WIP2

topics: ArtDrawingProgression

Almost finished with the drawing. The pic (clickable) turned out a little too dark I see now but I’m happy with the drawing’s progression, what an unsettling feeling!

Helena Bonham Carter drawing WIP1

Helena Bonham Carter WIP1

First stage of the Helena Bonham Carter pencil drawing I started yesterday. There’s not much else to say about it right now, I like how it looks so far so I don’t have any self-criticism to apply to it yet. ;)

Holly Marie Combs pencil drawing in progress

topics: ArtDrawingProgression

Currently, I’m stuck with my original drawings, no idea where to put what and choosing its colors have me in a panic as well. But instead of doing nothing at all in the mean time, I set out to do a good old portrait again.
Lately I’ve been re-watching Charmed episodes, so I decided on drawing the stunning Holly Marie Combs, the cutest of the Charmed sisters.

This is the latest stage of the drawing (stage 3), where I’m at now:

Although, now that I look at it again, the eyes are a bit Alyssa Milano-ish. Okay, I’ll have to fix that, or just move on to an Alyssa drawing.

These are the previous stages, the second (left) and the first (right):

Still needs a lot of work and improvement, obviously. All images are clickable and have a more detailed description alongside an enlargement.
Stay tuned for the final result.

It’s a strange, strange world

Okay, time to show you what I’m currently, and I use this term loosely — working on. You can click it to enlarge (don’t worry, she not naked, her breasts have smilies on them.)

I’ve never been very good with using colored pencils for my drawings, I normally simply stick with my 4H, HB and 4B pencils and such so I don’t need to panic about what color to use ‘here or here, wait what about there?’ That’s also why my paintings always take so long.

But if you’re not going to challenge yourself from time to time it just gets dull. So I decided I’d throw a bit of color into this drawing, not too much (baby steps,) I haven’t even decided yet what colors to use for the rest of the drawing and it’s been sitting around for a month or two.

So every two weeks I add some shade or finish an arm and then put it away to daydream about all the drawings and paintings I will have finished by the time I’m 60 (about 5, I’d wager.)

Painting: My first mural - Progression pt. 1

tags:

topics: ArtPaintingProgression

My “A Pink Bicycle’s Nightmare” painting is not yet completed, but last Saturday I stood here in my bedroom holding a beer in one hand and in the other, well, nothing, staring at my dull, empty, orange walls.
So I took a sip of my beer and a thought hit me right in the head “This wall would look great with Clint Eastwood on it, giving a thumbs up.” Luckily, I already had a little sketch of that somewhere - well not just somewhere, I knew exactly where I put it - so without any further hesitation, I went at it.

And one thing lead to another, and all of a sudden I found myself working on getting Angelina Jolie on my wall as well, though it wasn’t as sudden as I make it out to be; I couldn’t get Clint’s face to stop looking like Sly Stallone and I wanted to move on to something else for a while.

The blood smudges on the Clint side will probably get painted over with something else, after 7 beers I thought it was a nice touch, a stroke of genius, but it’s not so much.

And then Jolie was giving me a hard time so last night I started on incorporating a lion in there. But why stop there? I will probably add more stuff as I go along.
It’s the first mural I’m doing and it’s also a first that I’m working on something on this scale. The pieces of paper hanging on either side are regular A4 format so that gives you an idea of how big the painting is so far.
Everything still needs tons of work and correcting, but I’m excited about it so I thought I’d share what I’ve been doing 8 hours a day for the past week.

Painting: A Pink Bicycle’s Nightmare - Progression pt. 1

topics: ArtPaintingProgression

Been working on this for the last 2 weeks and as the title implies it’s still a work in progress.
I’m having fun sticking stuff onto the painting, something I haven’t done before, but after completing my latest painting I realised it’s really fun to be playful with your art.
So, I took some of my rolling paper, crumpled or balled up and stuck it on (girl’s earrings + skirt, beheaded bear’s bloody stump, evil red bear’s foaming mouth - I’ll try to take some decent close-up pics of it once it’s finished.)

Anyway, on to the progression’s picture, just click it to enlarge.

The picture isn’t of great quality because I used the flash, but the final product will get a decent treatment in that respect.

Painting: Untitled Progression pt. 4

tags:

topics: ArtPaintingProgression

Closer to completion, all that’s left now are tedious little details that I hope to finish some time during this week.
The picture isn’t that great, the angle is off and some of the colors got a bit washed out due to the flash, but it’s only a Work in Progress picture, once it’s finished I will properly scan it so that I can add it to my website.

It still needs a title, I can’t stand having ‘Untitled’ stuff and I can’t come up with anything else except for ‘The One with the Freaked out Bear,’ but it’s like ripping off Friends. So any ideas?

As usual, for a larger view just click the image.
