A cardboard box my brain is taken into for weekly maintenance

Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis portrait completed

February28

I had actually finished this a week ago, but I didn’t have time to put it online until tonight.

That was just a preview, for the full view just click the image above or this link:
http://www.askoek.nl/art/drawings/20090218_MartinLewis.php#show

It was interesting working on this since I’m not home during the week, (just the weekends, so I can share my creative endeavors with y’all) so I’ve been working on this elsewhere — what’s life without a little mystery, eh? — so that took a little getting used to, it still does, actually but I get a lot of feedback so that’s cool.

Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis portrait in progress

Week 4 (current stage) of the drawing (Feb. 15):

And earlier, week 3 (Feb. 2):

I hope to have completed it by the end of week 5!

Lucille Ball sketch on canvasboard

December14

Lately I’ve been a little obsessed with classic comedians, in particular Lucille Ball and Jerry Lewis. And two weeks ago I bought 3 new canvasboards so of course I wanted to put them to good use right away and chose to start with Lucille Ball.
This sketch has been sitting on my (brand new) easel for a week and I am anxious to start painting it.

The thing is though, I would love to make a little art video of its process, but I mostly paint at night and I don’t have a good lamp to install in my new ‘creative corner’ yet, we have one somewhere and we sent out a search party but no luck yet.

Even though all I have right now is a sketch, I just really wanted to show you guys what I’m working on, or more specifically: hope to be working on soon! Just click it for a larger view. :)

Portrait of the Day

November25

I hate to interrupt my constant flow of art-in-progress updates (I know, I know..) with a silly squee of joy, but I just wanted to document that my Helena Bonham Carter portrait from September was selected as portrait of the day at stars-portraits.com for today, 25/11/2008!
http://www.stars-portraits.com/en/portrait-53904.php

And of course I also had to take a screenshot of it.

Pumpkin Swamp

October29

I just want to say, I finished the painting and Happy Halloween!

Pumpkin Swamp, where pumpkins go to die and bananas get lost.
11×15″ - acrylics on canvas.

Visit tiogardubh.net for the scanned version in my art gallery for a better look.

Getting ready for Halloween

October11

Been a while since I updated, huh? I have not yet completed the Courteney Cox drawing I had been working on, I will though, at some point. I just have some stuff happening in my life which had temporarily distracted me from the drawing and then I suddenly felt I’d rather be painting:

Doesn’t look like much yet, I know, but hopefully its time will come.

Another drawing in progress - Courteney Cox - last 4 stages

September12

Current stage of the drawing:

I’ve been learning a bit on how to draw hair using this tutorial because I’ve never been very good at drawing hair and so far I think that what I did in this drawing, the hair is much better than on my previous drawings, although the picture is a little too dark and maybe too small to actually get a good look at the hair (somehow I always notice these things after I already closed Photoshop) but hopefully you get the idea. :)

From left to right are the previous stages:
Stage 3 (sept. 10), stage 2 (sept. 7) and the 1st stage (sept. 6):

Drawing Helena Bonham Carter done!

September4

HB, 4B, 4H and mechanical pencils on white paper (A3 format.) As always, you can click it for enlargement.

I didn’t expect it to be finished this soon, otherwise I wouldn’t have posted yesterday with its progression but I figured it would at least take me another day or two.
And unlike other times, I’m perfectly happy with the result, although (yes, here it comes) there should’ve been some shading on the wall behind her head, I totally forgot and I didn’t see that until after I scanned it, but I can live with that because her nose isn’t too long - my trademark flaw in most portraits.

Helena Bonham Carter WIP2

September4

Almost finished with the drawing. The pic (clickable) turned out a little too dark I see now but I’m happy with the drawing’s progression, what an unsettling feeling!

Helena Bonham Carter drawing WIP1

Helena Bonham Carter WIP1

First stage of the Helena Bonham Carter pencil drawing I started yesterday. There’s not much else to say about it right now, I like how it looks so far so I don’t have any self-criticism to apply to it yet. ;)
